Import Existing Emails
Migrate your emails from other providers to SipherMail easily
Migration Overview
SipherMail supports importing emails from all major providers
Microsoft 365 / Outlook
Export Steps:
- Open Outlook and go to File → Open & Export → Import/Export
- Select "Export to a file" and choose "Outlook Data File (.pst)"
- Select the mail folders you want to export
- Choose a location to save the .pst file
- Use a PST to MBOX converter tool (e.g., pst2mbox, readpst) to convert the .pst file to .mbox format
- Upload the resulting .mbox file in the SipherMail import wizard
Note: Outlook exports to PST format by default. You'll need a converter tool to convert PST to MBOX. Many free and paid tools are available online.
Google Workspace / Gmail
Export Steps:
- Go to Google Takeout (takeout.google.com)
- Select "Mail" and choose the Gmail account you want to export
- Choose MBOX format in the export options
- Click "Create export" and wait for Google to prepare your data
- Download the .mbox file when ready
- Upload the .mbox file in the SipherMail import wizard
Tip: Large Gmail accounts may take several hours to export. You'll receive an email when the export is ready.
Proton Mail
Export Steps:
- Log in to your Proton Mail account
- Go to Settings → Import/Export
- Click "Export" and select the folders you want to export
- Choose MBOX format
- Download the .mbox file
- Upload it in the SipherMail import wizard
Tuta
Export Steps:
- Log in to your Tuta account
- Go to Settings → Export
- Choose to export as EML or MBOX format
- If exporting as EML, zip the folder containing the .eml files
- If exporting as MBOX, use the .mbox file directly
- Upload the file in the SipherMail import wizard
Other Providers (Yahoo, iCloud, Fastmail, etc.)
General Instructions:
- Export your emails from your provider to MBOX or EML format
- If your provider doesn't support MBOX/EML export, use a third-party tool to convert your mail
- For EML files, create a ZIP archive containing all .eml files
- Upload the .mbox file or .zip file in the SipherMail import wizard
Using the SipherMail Import Wizard
Step-by-Step:
- Go to Settings → Import Emails (individual) or Org Settings → Import Emails (business)
- Select your email provider from the list
- Follow the provider-specific export instructions shown
- Choose the file format (MBOX, EML ZIP, or Sipher JSON)
- Upload your exported file
- Enter your IMAP/App Password (this is securely encrypted and only used for the import)
- Choose the destination folder (Inbox, Archive, Sent, etc.)
- Confirm and start the import
- Monitor the import progress in the job history
Note: Large imports may take several hours. You can close the browser and check back later - the import will continue processing in the background.
